"Free Voices of Crimea": Documenting behind the "glass wall"

“Free Voices of Crimea” is a collection created at the initiative of Ukrainian PEN — portraits of sixteen journalists and human rights activists, most of whom are Crimean Tatars illegally imprisoned by Russia. They cannot tell their stories directly, so the book brings their voices to life through letters, diaries, court appearances, and excerpts of texts. How to write about people with whom it is impossible to talk in person? How to convey their stories when there is a “glass wall” of prison bars and censorship between the author and the hero? We will talk about how to preserve testimonies when there is a need to speak on behalf of the heroes — so that the voices of Crimean political prisoners can be heard in the world despite all attempts to silence them.
